Making your company a great place to work is a key component of attracting the right kind of employee.
Unfortunately, this often translates into “perks” and when the economy tanks, those perks are the first thing to go.
But that doesn’t have to be the case.
There are several ways to offer employees something extra without stepping outside your company’s tight budget.
Throw A Party
Employees love feeling appreciated, so throwing a regular gala to congratulate employees on a job well done or celebrate all the birthdays in a given month is an easy and inexpensive way to strengthen the morale of your team.
Make it a potluck affair or designate an afternoon of cake and socializing complete with an early release and you’ve got a great perk that costs you next to nothing.
Offer Flex Time
Giving your employees the ability to have some say in the hours they work is an easy way to build morale and perhaps even extend your company’s business hours without drastically increasing your overhead.
You can stagger regular work schedules or if it works for you, offer part-time schedules to employees who want it. The result is that employees are more productive when they’re sitting behind the desk because they’ve been able to create a schedule that better fits their lifestyle.
Send Them to School
Offering to pay all or even part of an employee’s tuition is a big perk and one that should be seriously considered. Yes, you’ll have to budget to make it work but if you structure it correctly, the new skills your employees learn from going back to school should more than pay for the tuition you contribute.
Casual Day
Even the most formal offices can find a way to invoke a casual day each week and although wearing jeans and t-shirts might seem trivial to you, your employees will look forward to that day of comfortable dress. And the best part of this perk? It costs you absolutely nothing to implement.
Sponsor Group Events
If you can afford to take your employees roller skating or out for a game of laser tag, great! Do it and do it frequently. But if you can’t… no worries… find a charity or volunteer effort and get your employees involved that way. This is a simple but very powerful way to boost team spirit while allowing your employees to get involved in their community at the same time.
And the more empowered your employees feel personally, the more productive they’ll be on the job.
